Waste processor reaches deep to retrieve recyclables
Major waste management contractor, SITA Australia has added fleet of seven Terex ®TLB 850 loader backhoes at its waste transfer stations across metropolitan Sydney.
David Muir, Sydney Transfer Station Manager at SITA Australia said, “Safety, speed, mobility and durability are very important for us. We have used earlier Terex models and found them ideal for our unique waste sorting application. Equipment is worked almost continuously and mechanical reliability is a key issue in maintaining our productivity goals for sustainable waste management.
“The loader backhoes are positioned above the packer that loads the trailers. Specially trained operators help sweep the huge volume of mixed residential, commercial and industrial waste into the packer, while intercepting and extracting recyclable materials with a purpose-designed grab which replaces the standard backhoe bucket”.
“The centremount configuration of the backhoe is more robust than the side mount version. This improves reliability because the backhoe doesn’t have a sliding mechanism and locking rams that may fail under the constant heavy workload which would not be encountered in typical loader backhoe applications.
“The TLB 850 machines have a number of design enhancements which we found appealing. For example, the extendible stick has a casing on the outside for better protection; the hydraulic system has been specially tuned to deliver the power we need without over stressing components and the wider stabilizer spread gives it a very safe and reassuring level of stability.
“Cast components at the rear of this machine are more heavily constructed and the cabin is generously proportioned, making it more comfortable for the operator during long hours at the controls. Visibility from the operator’s position is also excellent,” Muir said.
