How do you increase your profile in the crowded hire and rental business? For Smart Hire, the answer is not complicated: specialise in supplying equipment that most of your customers need.

“With customer service being the cornerstone of a successful hire and rental businesses, it often pays to have a specialisation where your business can become well-known in a particular field of expertise”, said owners Hein and Veronica Otten.

Nine years ago they acquired the Carnegie Rental Centre, renaming it Smart Hire. They quickly discovered that landscape, building and plumbing contractors across south-eastern Melbourne constituted around 80 percent of the business’ hire contracts.

Recognising the potential of mini excavator hires for work such as digging footings and trenches, the first excavator purchase was a 1 tonne Takeuchi mini excavator. So popular was the response to this machine that over the last five years they have added another 10 machines which include 1.6 and 2.7 tonne Takeuchi excavators.

“Our investment in these robustly engineered machines has turned out to be an excellent business decision. Hire customers report that Takeuchi machines are easy to operate and perform with great reliability. Operators find them very stable on the work site and the cabin is a comfortable workspace when working for longer periods. We usually supply attachments such as buckets, jackhammers and posthole diggers.

“We stock other excavators, however customers prefer the Takeuchi, usually because they have extra power which means they get the job done faster and more efficiently.

“There is no doubt that specialising in excavator hire has made a major contribution to our expansion and growth over the last five years. We now employ 22 people across two locations; Princes Highway at Carnegie and in Oakleigh South with a total of 5,000 square metres of operational space”, Hein and Veronica added.
